Jan 20, 2017; Oak Mountain High School vs Spain Park High School girls varsity basketball.

The game didnt start well for the visiting Jags in their area contest at Mountain Brook High School. In a game where the winner advances to the playoffs, the varsity boys team were in a 2-0 hole giving up goals in the first twenty minutes of the game. The Jags began scratching their way back into the game at the 25th minute mark when junior Brooks Rice forced a turnover in the back of the Mountain Brook defense which allowed senior captain Liam Condone to thunder home a 20 yard shot from the top of the penalty area. The Jags were able to tie the score with less than two minutes before halftime when senior Gersain Leon found a loose ball in the mouth of the MB goal area off a corner kick from Brooks Rice and able to fire it into the goal. During the first half, sophomore goal keeper Trevor Bernier made several incredible saves in the first half to keep the score 2-2, and added to his play in the second half as he and the Spain Park defense of Anders Jonas, Daniel Olvera, Jonovan Arguedas, and Cole Starr were able to hold off the Spartan offense. In the second half, Condone staked the Jags into the lead in the 58th minute when he beat his defender on a corner kick from junior Adrian Castro to head the ball past the keeper to make the score 3-2. Six minutes later, Condone completed his hat trick by finishing a rebound off a set piece shot from Rice to give the Jags a two goal lead at 4-2. Finally, the game was clinched when junior Cameron Sumpter fed Brooks Rice for a breakaway goal to complete the scoring at 5-2. It was Rice’s 29th goal of the season and Sumpter’s sixth assist.  Bernier finished the game with nine saves to earn his fourteenth win of the season in goal. The midfield was marshaled and led by seniors Zach Cole, Gersain Leon, Condone, and Castro. The Jags have qualified for the playoffs and will play Vestavia Hills High School in the first round of the state tournament. The Jags are now 14-6-1 on the season and our next game is Wednesday, April 19 at home vs Shades Valley High School at 6:30pm for senior night. We invite all supporters to come out and support your Jags!
