On Saturday at the Auburn University Club, 8th grader Nick Dunlap overcame a 2 shot deficit to earn low medalist honors in the Joe King Memorial tournament. Dunlap trailed Mtn. Brook’s Gordon Sargent after round 1 on Friday as Sargent shot 5-under par, 67, and Dunlap fired a 3-under par, 69. But on Saturday, Dunlap made 3 birdies in a row on holes 11, 12, and 13 to propel him into the lead. He posted another round of 3-under, 69, to earn his first high school individual win.
Dunlap’s 6-under par finish was 2 shots better than teammate Ethan Hagood’s 4-under par total. Hagood, a senior, followed up his win at the Fairhope Invitational to start the season with a runner-up finish, shooting 74-66. Hagood’s 2nd round 66 was a textbook bogey-free round, his best of his high school career.
Senior Landon Carner added a top-10 finish as he tied for 9th place, shooting 71-76. Senior Reed Hereford finished in a tie for 19th after shooting 75-77 and Senior Carter Goodwin tied for 21st, just 1 shot behind by carding scores of 76-77.
The Jags finished runner-up to Mtn. Brook in the team competition as the Spartans capitalized on their stellar 1st day score of 5-under par, 283, a round that included 5 eagles. The Jags scores of 289-288 (1-over par, 577) was 2 shots behind Mtn. Brook’s 283-292 (1-under par, 575). The next closest team scores were Hewitt-Trussville and Vestavia Hills, who both posted 2-day scores of 620.
Spain Park will play next in the Bradley Johnson Memorial at Greystone’s Founders course on March 12-13.
