Boys Varsity Wrestling · Battle for the Ball

On Friday night the Spain Park and Hoover wrestling teams competed in the Battle for the Ball.

The match between Spain Park and Hoover has been called “The Battle for the Ball.”  The ball is a bowling ball, and it is the trophy that goes to the winner of the match.  The “Ball” is a traveling trophy; it stays with the school that wins the match.

So why a bowling ball?

Bowling was one of the hobbies and passions of Coach Duke Chimento.  Coach Chimento was the head wrestling coach of Berry High School before there was a Hoover or Spain Park.  Coach Chimento had over 30 years as a wrestling coach at both Phillips and Berry High Schools.  During his career he had three runner-up teams at State, many champion wrestlers, and a countless number of young men whose life he impacted and influenced.

Hoover won the Battle 56-16:
