Boys Varsity Wrestling · Wrestlers Have Senior Night

On Wednesday night the Spain Park wrestlers hosted Hoover in the Battle for the Ball.

It was also Senior Night where we honored our one senior, Jaxon Bast.  Jaxon currently has 35 wins, 30 by pin, which leads the team.  He currently stands second in takedowns with 51.

His lifetime record is 160 wins, which places him fourth in Spain Park Records.  112 of those wins were by pin which is a new Spain Park record.

Jaxon is the 2019 State Heavyweight Champion.

Next up was the Battle for the Ball.  The match between Spain Park and Hoover has been called “The Battle for the Ball.”  The ball is a bowling ball, and it is the trophy that goes to the winner of the match.  The “Ball” is a traveling trophy; it stays with the school that wins the match.

So why a bowling ball?

Bowling was one of the hobbies and passions of Coach Duke Chimento.  Coach Chimento was the head wrestling coach of Berry High School before there was a Hoover or Spain Park.  Coach Chimento had over 30 years as a wrestling coach at both Phillips and Berry High Schools.  During his career he had three runner-up teams at State, many champion wrestlers, and a countless number of young men whose life he impacted and influenced.  Coach Chimento wrestled at Auburn University under one of their most well-known coaches, Swede Umbach.

Unfortunately, the match did not go in favor of the Jags as Hoover won 50-21.  Match details follow:
