Thursday night was a beautiful evening as the 4th ranked Spain Park boys varsity soccer team (7A) hosted the 2nd ranked Homewood Patriots (6A) in a Birmingham metro game. It was a physical contest as neither team backed down, attacking each other with speed and the numerous tough challenges on the ball. The first breakthrough for either side came to Homewood as they hit Spain Park on the counterattack in the 21st minute to take a 1-0. This score line stayed this way til halftime, preparing the fans for an entertaining second half. The Jags finally tied the score in the 11th minute of the second half when Kaleb Jowers collected a rebound to score from a Spain Park free kick taken by Shea Tillette. Fourteen minutes later, Jowers doubled his tally when he powered a header past the Homewood goal keeper from a cross by Seth Walter. Although this was Jowers 7th goal of the season, it did not last long as Homewood would be awarded a penalty kick three minutes later to tie the game with 16 minutes left in the contest. It appeared the game was headed for a tie til with eight minutes left in regulation, Alan Melendez flicked a Logan Edwards pass to an open Shea Tillette in the Homewood penalty area, which he buried his shot past the Homewood goal keeper for the winning goal. With the win the Jags improve to 8 wins 1 loss and 2 ties on the season. The next game for the Jags will be Tuesday night March 16 at area rival Vestavia Hills High School at 7pm.
