On Tuesday night the visiting Spain Park Jags visited Vestavia Hills High School in a battle for the top spot in area play. Vestavia came out strong forcing the action, leading to several early chances for the Rebels off of turnovers by the Jags. After weathering the strong start by the Rebs, the Jags were able to create chances midway in the first half through an effective counterattack which eventually led to their first goal 19 minutes into the first half. In the buildup, Kaleb Jowers won a header at midfield to play Jag teammate Anderson Ivey on the right flank. Ivey collected the ball to thread a pass to overlapping Jag midfielder Bryce Burdette, who was able to place his shot past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Logan Edwards was able to beat his defender on the left flank of the field to find Jag striker Kaleb Jowers in the Vestavia penalty area, who was taken down by a defender for a Spain Park penalty kick. Conner Warren scored the penalty kick for the Jags to increase the lead to 2-0. Vestavia fought back in the first half and was awarded a penalty kick with 5 minutes til halftime to cut the lead to 2-1. The second half produced few chances for either team and the Jags were able to secure the 2-1 win. Spain Park goalkeeper Chase Tilashalski contributed to the win making three saves during the game. The Jags lead area play with a 3-0 record and improve their overall record to 9 wins 1 loss and 2 ties. Next action for the Jags is Tuesday March 30 at Chelsea High School.
