On Friday night April 30 #4 Grissom High School hosted #1 Spain Park High School in an epic contest between two teams that knew each other well. This was the third meeting between the two squads and this game did not disappoint. After a few minutes of both teams feeling each other out, Grissom would strike first in the 8th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The game continued in a back and forth affair til the Jags found their first goal with 2 minutes to go til halftime by a header by Kaleb Jowers from a Josh Rowland cross. After the halftime period the game remained tied til 8 minutes had expired in the second half, when Grissom picked up a turnover in the Jags midfield and was able to finish a through ball into the back of the net. Despite giving up the goal the Jags pushed for the equalizer and was rewarded with a second goal by Kaleb Jowers from a feed by Alan Melendez with 4 minutes remaining in regulation play. After tying the game, momentum was with the Jags in overtime and their hard work provided the winner in the last minute of double overtime. Alan Melendez received a lofted ball from Drake Tabor to head it past the keeper for his second game winning goal of the week. This is the second time these two players have combined for the game winning goal after their first round game vs Oak Mountain. With the win, the Jags advance to the semifinals of the AHSAA playoffs to face off with the Hoover Bucs next Friday at 3pm. The game will be played at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Stadium.
